Hi!
Thank G-d, it’s been a busy Jewish holiday season: beautiful and inspiring, hectic and crazy, and still wonderful and fun.
As for now, I’m glad to be back at the keyboard! But first – a quick summary of what we’ve covered until now; it’s been a while!
Quick Recap
The goal of this project is to bring to light the Jewish view of raising children, and how it fits with the modern world of today.
So, we began with a basic question: What is a child?
We answered that a child is not just a “kid” but an adult-to-be, given to the care of his parents for a decade or two. And that each adult is an entire world – just like you. In today’s lingo: children are people whose lives matter.
We talked about how society today has failed us with its lack of appreciation for children; how it is confused about values so basic as the mandate to give life to the next generation.
We talked about how the true reason religious Jews have children is because it is a mitzvah – the first one in the Torah, no less. We talked about how that mitzvah is fundamental to our mission in the world: to subdue the power of its physicality and reveal G-d’s spirit within it.
I then shared how this journey of discovery is showing itself to be the secret of success in raising my family with joy.
There’s still a few more ideas I intend to cover within this subtopic – the meaning of a child in Judaism. We’ll get there, but for now, I’m ready to move on to the next idea.
Which is: What is a parent?
Stay tuned… I hope to be posting the first ideas very shortly, G-d willing!
